A deadly drone attack claimed by Ukraine has struck the Kupol Electromechanical Plant in Izhevsk, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to at least 35 others, according to Russian officials. The factory, located over 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, is known for its production of military hardware, including surface-to-air missile systems.

Reports indicate that two long-range drones were employed in the attack, launched by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) from approximately 1,300 kilometers away. Udmurtia Governor Aleksandr Bechalov reported that ten of the injured sustained serious wounds and that he has informed President Vladimir Putin about the incident. Social media footage verified by the BBC captured the moment of explosion, showing smoke billowing from the factory’s roof.

In response to the attack, Russia's civil aviation authority temporarily restricted operations at Izhevsk airport, though these restrictions were lifted a few hours later. This event marks a continuation of Ukrainian efforts to disrupt Russia’s military production capabilities, following a similar strike on the same facility last November, which did not result in casualties.

As the conflict escalates, Russia recently launched a significant bombardment of Ukraine, deploying a record 537 drones and missiles on various sites, including urban centers such as Kyiv and Lviv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has remained skeptical about Russia's diplomatic intentions, criticizing Putin for stalling peace negotiations while ramping up military operations.

Efforts toward a ceasefire have yet to yield positive outcomes, despite multiple dialogue attempts facilitated by international leaders. Observers note that the ongoing violence threatens to further entrench both sides in their positions, complicating any future peace prospects.
