A black box has been discovered at the crash site of Air India flight AI171, which tragically went down shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu confirmed that the flight data recorder was recovered by the Indian Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) within 28 hours of the crash. The incident claimed the lives of 241 of the 242 people on board, as well as at least eight individuals on the ground, raising urgent questions about the causes of this devastating accident.
The recovery of the black box is a significant step towards understanding the factors leading to the crash, which occurred less than a minute after takeoff on Thursday. The black box, which includes essential data on flight parameters and cockpit conversations, is expected to aid investigators in piecing together the circumstances that led to the disaster. The inquiry is being supported by teams from the US and the UK, alongside efforts from Boeing, which confirmed its commitment to assist with the investigation.
Victims of the crash included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, all of whom were on the Airbus 787 Dreamliner. Eyewitness accounts describe the wreckage scattered across a residential area known as Meghani Nagar, with significant debris damaging multiple buildings. Investigators are currently collecting DNA samples from relatives to help identify the remains of victims, including four students from BJ Medical College who lost their lives when the plane struck their campus.
Vishwashkumar Ramesh, the only known survivor, is recovering in the hospital. His harrowing account of narrowly escaping the inferno is a stark reminder of the tragedy faced by so many families still awaiting news of their loved ones. Imtiaz Ali, a brother of a passenger, expressed his disbelief and ongoing hope as he waits for confirmation regarding his brother's fate.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site, offering condolences as communities grapple with the aftermath of the disaster. Air India has announced the implementation of additional safety checks across its fleet as a preventative measure, underscoring the ongoing concerns regarding airline safety. With the investigation still in its early stages, families and citizens alike yearn for answers and closure in the wake of such overwhelming loss.
