In brief

In a display of solidarity, supporters of Imran Khan surged towards Islamabad, defying government lockdowns and police hostility. With one officer reported killed, the protests echo a larger struggle against perceived political repression and call for fresh elections.

Thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan took to the streets of Pakistan on Monday, defying a government-imposed lockdown and facing violent opposition from law enforcement as they marched toward Islamabad to demand his release. This demonstration marks a significant escalation in the ongoing political tensions that have gripped the nation since Khan’s arrest in August 2023.The protesters, led by Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, and prominent political ally Ali Amin Gandapur, managed to dismantle barriers and shipping containers set by authorities, which were meant to obstruct their path. The mobilization resulted in violent clashes with police in the Attock district, approximately 50 miles from the capital, resulting in injuries on both sides and the death of at least one police officer.Despite being ensnared in over 150 criminal cases that his supporters argue are politically motivated, Khan continues to enjoy substantial public support. He claims that the military-backed government is attempting to stifle his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (P.T.I.), and undermine democracy.Khan has accused the ruling coalition of rigging elections and brokering an alliance with the military to suppress dissent. The government, on the other hand, claims that Khan is inciting chaos through these protests and has maintained that the allegations against him are valid, dismissing calls for negotiations regarding his release. On the eve of the protests, Khan urged his followers to convene in the capital, pushing for fresh elections and the repeal of constitutional amendments that have limited judicial authority. His calls were met with a large turnout, illustrating the depth of support he continues to command despite the government's efforts to quash it.
