The Israeli military says its air force has carried out its 'most powerful strike' in Yemen in response to the Houthi movement's repeated drone and missile attacks on Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that dozens of its aircraft bombed targets belonging to the Houthis' security and intelligence services and military in the capital Sanaa.
The Houthi-run government's health ministry condemned what it termed Israel's 'brutal crime', asserting that civilian facilities and residential buildings were affected and that eight people were killed.
This escalation follows a recent Houthi drone attack causing injuries in the Israeli Red Sea resort of Eilat.
The Houthis have controlled much of north-western Yemen since ousting the internationally recognized government ten years ago, which sparked a civil war. Their activities against Israel intensified following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza in October 2023.
Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes in Yemen retaliating against the hundreds of missiles and drones launched by the Houthis.
Videos from Sanaa revealed large plumes of black smoke rising from at least three locations after the Israeli strike, which interrupted a speech by Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi on Al-Masirah TV.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed on social media the country's commitment to striking 'numerous terror targets' associated with the Houthi organization. The IDF detailed that military headquarters as well as weapon storage sites were among the targets.
As tensions rise, the international community remains concerned about the impact of these military actions on civilian populations in Yemen.
