In brief
One sailor sustained minor injuries when a fighter jet was lost overboard from the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman, highlighting challenges faced by U.S. military operations in the region.
In a concerning incident during a naval operation in the Red Sea on Monday, an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet and a tow tractor fell off the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, according to statements from the U.S. Navy. One sailor sustained minor injuries, and the Navy has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The fighter jet, valued at approximately $67 million, was being towed in the carrier's hangar bay when crew members reportedly lost control. The U.S.S. Harry S. Truman was engaged in maneuvers to reposition itself against perceived threats from Houthi militias in Yemen when the mishap occurred, with three Defense Department officials suggesting that these tactical turns may have contributed to the plane's unfortunate plunge into the sea.In a related escalation, a spokesman for the Houthi group, Yahya Saree, confirmed that missiles and drones were launched at the Truman during this operation. The Houthis have previously targeted both commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, framing these actions as solidarity with the residents of Gaza and the Hamas group.Since President Trump authorized military action against the Houthis in March, known as Operation Rough Rider, U.S. forces have reportedly struck over 800 targets across Yemen. The focus of these attacks has included key military infrastructure such as command centers, air defenses, and weapons manufacturing sites.Despite the loss of the jet, the Navy asserted that the Truman and its accompanying strike group are still “fully mission capable.” This incident is not isolated; earlier, in February, the carrier collided with a merchant vessel near Port Said, Egypt, resulting in the dismissal of the carrier strike group commander. Previous to that, in December, another F/A-18 jet from the carrier was shot down during operations, but both pilots were successfully rescued. The ongoing challenges and incidents aboard the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman underline the complexities of military operations in high-stakes regions of conflict, as naval forces contend with both external threats and internal difficulties.
