In brief

The search for three climbers missing on Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak, has been suspended as authorities fear they may not have survived the extreme weather conditions.

The three climbers, identified as Americans Kurt Blair, 56, and Carlos Romero, 50, and an unnamed Canadian, disappeared during their attempt to summit the 12,000-foot mountain. They flew in to start their ascent on Saturday and were expected to depart on Monday but never returned. Rescue operations commenced on Monday, yet harsh conditions impeded the search. Found among the retrieved belongings were a jacket, ice ax, energy gels, and footprints, indicating the climbers’ likely location. Inspector Vicki Walker from the New Zealand Police expressed the grim outlook, emphasizing the duration of time the climbers have been missing, lack of communication, and the items encountered during search efforts. Both American climbers were certified professionals in skiing, alpine climbing, and rock climbing, affiliated with the American Mountain Guides Association. The local authorities are in touch with the families of the missing men, offering condolences during this heart-wrenching time.
