In brief
Following the U.S. Coast Guard's announcement to provide a base for operating U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Alameda, local officials expressed harsh criticism. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the move, suggesting it is aimed at inciting protests and violence. This deployment is part of a broader federal initiative to enforce strict immigration policies and track undocumented individuals. Leaders emphasized their commitment to protecting immigrant communities and vowed legal action against any military involvement in peaceful cities.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard said it is providing a base of operations for U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in the San Francisco area as part of an effort to support federal initiatives aimed at tracking down immigrants in the country illegally and enhancing border security.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that over 100 CBP and other federal agents will begin operations at a Coast Guard base in Alameda starting Thursday. This rapid deployment has drawn immediate condemnation from San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and California Governor Gavin Newsom, who argue that the motive behind this surge is to provoke unrest and violent protests.
A Coast Guard statement reiterated that its strategy employs a “whole of government approach” to detect and mitigate illegal immigration and related criminal activity. Importantly, Lurie highlighted that this deployment could lead to widespread fear among immigrants, undermining their ability to live without anxiety in their communities.
In a livestream announcement, Mayor Lurie denounced the aggressive tactics being utilized by federal officials, arguing they incite chaos rather than foster safety. President Trump’s repeated declarations to deploy National Guard troops in cities, including San Francisco, as a crime deterrent have not yet resulted in an official timeline.
While Lurie and Newsom did not mention Trump directly, their statements clearly framed the proposed military action as unnecessary and detrimental. The Governor firmly pledged to respond immediately through legal channels should any military personnel be deployed in violation of state wishes.
It is noteworthy that cities like San Francisco and Oakland have adopted sanctuary policies, refusing to collaborate with federal immigration operations, creating a contentious backdrop for federal initiatives. Governor Newsom’s administration has vowed to vigorously oppose such federal tactics, characterized by their potential to provoke societal discord.
In light of these developments, community leaders have called on residents to respond peacefully, with Lurie outlining strategies to support immigrants in the event of a significant federal presence. Oakland’s Mayor Barbara Lee echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that real safety solutions must originate locally rather than from federal intervention.
