PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Brown University community is reeling following a tragic shooting that took place last Saturday, resulting in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. Authorities are scouring the campus and surrounding areas for evidence, including video footage that may help them in identifying the shooter.
On Monday, investigators released three videos showing a man wearing a mask and a dark jacket walking in the vicinity of the university hours before the shooting. The FBI has described the suspect as approximately 5 feet, 8 inches tall and of stocky build, and has offered a $50,000 reward for any information leading to his identification and arrest.
Providence police chief Col. Oscar Perez appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the suspect, expressing hope that someone might recognize him from the released footage.
The shooting occurred in an auditorium-style classroom during final exams, raising concerns about campus security and the presence of surveillance cameras in the area. Many in the university community have criticized the response from law enforcement, questioning the thoroughness of the investigation and the apparent lack of immediate steps to secure the campus after the shooting took place.
Governor Dan McKee has requested additional local police presence in schools to reassure students and families. Meanwhile, a local church is planning a service for healing and remembrance.
As the investigation continues, details about the victims have emerged. Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore and a beloved figure in her church community, was among those tragically lost. Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman, also lost his life. Friends and family described him as resilient, having overcome significant health challenges.
Of the nine wounded, only one has been released from the hospital as of Sunday, with several others remaining in critical but stable condition. In the wake of this tragedy, the community is coming together to support the families of the victims and those injured, showcasing a spirit of solidarity amidst their grief.
