In brief

Despite President Trump's claims of active negotiations with China, officials in Beijing deny any talks are occurring, highlighting growing tensions between the two nations.

President Trump has recently implied that the USA and China are engaged in fruitful trade negotiations to help stabilize wavering financial markets. However, his claims are strongly contradicted by Chinese government officials, who assert that no discussions are currently taking place. In a recent interview with Time magazine, Trump indicated that he had been in contact with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He claimed that his administration is involved in ongoing discussions related to trade agreements, providing a glimmer of hope to anxious investors. Yet during a press briefing on Friday, when questioned about the timing of their conversations, Trump avoided clarifying whether these occurred after tariffs were imposed this month. His remarks seemed designed to create an illusion of progress amidst a backdrop of market turmoil, with the S&P 500 index tumbling 10% since the start of his presidency on January 20. However, the Chinese government promptly rejected Trump's assertions. Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, firmly stated, “China and the U.S. have not held consultations or negotiations on the issue of tariffs,” emphasizing a call for equality and respect in the dialogue. Additional voices from the Chinese Commerce Ministry also highlighted the absence of any economic discussions, asserting that the U.S. needs to cease its threats and engage in constructive conversations. As trade relations continue to deteriorate, the contrasting messages from U.S. and Chinese leaders reflect the complexities and tensions inherent in their ongoing trade war, leaving markets and analysts in uncertainty.
