Elon Musk has stated that critics of his social media site X are merely searching for an excuse for censorship in light of reports alleging that X's AI chatbot, Grok, has been generating non-consensual sexualized images of individuals, including minors.

In response to these allegations, Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, announced an urgent assessment of the platform, a measure supported by the Technology Secretary, Liz Kendall. She condemned the creation of sexual images of children and women as \u201cdespicable and abhorrent\u201d and indicated an expectation for a swift update from Ofcom in a matter of days.

X has subsequently limited the AI image generation feature to those who pay a monthly subscription, a decision that the government described as insulting to victims of sexual violence. Reports from the BBC have revealed numerous instances where the AI has generated images depicting women in sexualized contexts without their consent.

Ashley St Clair, a conservative influencer and mother of one of Musk's children, shared her distress about Grok having generated sexualized imagery of her as a child, stating it showed her in inappropriate poses despite her explicit refusals to generate such content. St Clair, who has an ongoing custody dispute with Musk, criticized the platform for not taking sufficient action against illegal content, emphasizing the need for a direct message to the engineering team to halt such practices.

As of the latest updates, Grok has informed users requesting alterations to images that its functionality is available only to subscribers, prompting considerable criticism of the platform.

Further scrutiny has arisen from various political figures, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who labeled the situation as disgraceful, while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described it as horrible in every way. Additionally, the Liberal Democrats have urged for temporary restrictions on access to X in the UK pending investigations into the AI's operations.

An Ofcom spokesperson confirmed that they are working swiftly to ensure accountability from X, stating they made contact with the platform to receive detailed explanations, emphasizing the urgency of their evaluation process.
