Explosion in Athens' Plaka Leaves Two Dead

A blast that tore through a three‑storey holiday‑rental building in the historic Plaka district of Athens has left two people dead and several others missing, officials report.

The blast occurred on a narrow street situated between Athens’ iconic Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

Greek police confirmed that a British national, an American man and woman, and two US tourists were among the missing. The deceased also included a Greek and a UK national who had lived in the building.

A gas leak was cited as the suspected cause of the explosion. Emergency workers used excavators and thermal imaging cameras to search the wreckage for survivors.

The three‑storey structure collapsed completely, leaving debris scattered across the road and damaging nearby buildings. Some surrounding residents were evacuated due to falling materials.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the incident as an "incredible disaster" and called for a thorough investigation.

The UK Foreign Office affirmed that it was aware of the explosion and was in contact with local authorities. The event has heightened international concern over safety standards in historic tourist districts.
