Casey Means, a physician with a background in nutrition and wellness, is set to face the Senate health committee as she seeks confirmation to become the U.S. surgeon general. Known for her critical stance on traditional healthcare, Means has gained popularity for advocating lifestyle changes to combat chronic diseases fueled by poor nutrition.
Despite her significant following, Means faces skepticism regarding her lack of government experience and the status of her medical license, which is currently inactive after she withdrew from her surgical residency in 2018 citing systemic issues within the healthcare system.
As the U.S. surgeon general, she would guide public health initiatives and access new strategies aimed at chronic disease prevention. A key element of her mission aligns with the 'Make America Healthy Again' agenda promoted by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., with an emphasis on fostering nutritional awareness and addressing hyper-processed food consumption.
Means presently co-founded Levels, a health app focused on lifestyle and nutrition tracking, and has been involved in promoting various health products. However, allegations surfaced regarding her financial ties to products she recommended, raising ethical concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
In her ethics filings, she pledged to divest from certain financial interests linked to food and health, should she be confirmed. She aims to reshape public health discourse by integrating personal responsibility and nutritional education, notwithstanding her notable absence in vaccine policy discussions.
As she prepares for her confirmation hearing, the questions before her will serve to clarify how her vision aligns with the role of surgeon general amidst an evolving public health landscape.
