In brief

In a poignant gesture, Prince Harry has walked through a minefield in Angola, echoing Princess Diana's iconic journey in 1997, amid growing challenges to international land mine prohibitions.

On a recent trip to Cuito Cuanavale, Angola, Prince Harry followed in the footsteps of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who famously brought global attention to the dangers posed by land mines during her 1997 visit. Diana's visit, marked by her courage in walking through a minefield, led to significant international action, culminating in the signing of the United Nations convention that banned antipersonnel land mines, which ultimately curtailed production and led to sweeping destruction of existing stockpiles. However, Prince Harry's revisit comes at a time of renewed global tension and declining compliance with the treaty. Recently, countries like Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have announced their withdrawal from the anti-land mine convention, citing security concerns exacerbated by the geopolitical fallout from the Ukraine conflict that began in 2022. With this withdrawal, fear looms that the indiscriminate use of these deadly weapons might emerge once again, endangering the lives of innocent civilians and children.During this latest expedition, Harry worked alongside de-miners from The Halo Trust, a charitable organization dedicated to clearing land mines and promoting safety in former war zones. In a symbolic act of hope, he helped dismantle several anti-tank mines from Angola's tumultuous past, where land mines have claimed thousands of lives since the conflict ended in 2002. With reports indicating at least 60,000 casualties due to land mines in Angola since 2008, Prince Harry’s return to this area not only commemorates his mother's legacy but also serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing dangers posed by land mines in conflict areas worldwide alike.
