In brief
A report by Britain's Charity Commission criticizes Captain Tom Moore's family for profiting from his legacy, including financial mismanagement in the charitable foundation set up in his honor, raising concerns about ethical conduct.
Captain Tom Moore, a beloved British Army veteran, captured hearts during the pandemic by raising approximately 40 million pounds ($50.5 million) for the National Health Service. However, his legacy has now been marred by allegations of misconduct involving his daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband, Colin. On November 21, 2024, the Charity Commission released a report detailing their findings, which assert that the Ingram-Moores have damaged public trust through their "serious and repeated" misconduct regarding the Captain Tom Foundation. The couple allegedly withheld nearly 1.5 million pounds ($1.9 million) in advance payments for three books written by Moore, contradicting promises to allocate some funds to the foundation. In a further breach, the Ingram-Moores misused the foundation's name to gain planning permissions for a luxury spa and pool, which they later were forced to demolish. Additionally, Hannah Ingram-Moore was reported to have been untruthful about her intentions regarding a salary, having previously applied for a six-figure position at the foundation, which she initially denied.David Holdsworth, chief executive of the Charity Commission, expressed disappointment, stating that the actions of the Ingram-Moores do not reflect the selfless values Captain Moore stood for. He emphasized that the boundaries between private interests and charity have been blurred, resulting in significant personal gains for the couple.
