Princess Anne made a surprise visit to Ukraine to raise awareness about the traumatic experiences of children living amid the ongoing conflict. In her visit, she left a toy bear at a memorial honoring children who have lost their lives since Russia's invasion and spoke to young victims reportedly taken from their homes.
During her discussions with President Volodymyr Zelensky, she addressed the UK's support for Ukraine and reaffirmed solidarity with the nation amidst its ongoing struggles.
The trip, sanctioned by the Foreign Office, follows a recent visit to Kyiv by her nephew, Prince Harry, who engaged with war-wounded veterans.
Accompanied by First Lady Olena Zelenska, Anne paid her respects at the Children’s Memorial in Kharkiv and visited the Child Rights Protection Centre, a facility dedicated to supporting children affected by the war.
Estimates indicate that approximately 19,500 Ukrainian children have been forcibly displaced or deported since February 2022, with only 1,605 managing to return home according to the government's Children of War database.
The international community has responded strongly, with the International Criminal Court issuing warrants against Russian officials for the alleged unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children. Russia, however, denies these allegations, claiming its actions were meant to protect children from conflict zones.
Anne's visit comes just after the UK enforced new sanctions targeting individuals supporting the alleged forced deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children.
In addition to her main engagements, the princess met female police and armed forces officers working to protect civilians, as well as veterans suffering from conflict-related trauma, and visited St. Sophia’s Cathedral and a cultural exhibition in Kherson, showcasing Ukraine’s resilience.
Her visit marks a significant demonstration of royal support for Ukraine, echoing sentiments from other members of the British royal family who have also engaged with Ukrainian refugees and leaders over the past year.
