In a powerful demonstration of solidarity for human rights, more than a dozen elected officials were arrested on Thursday while protesting at a New York City immigration holding facility. The protest came in response to a recent federal court ruling demanding the government improve the conditions under which detainees are held. Among those detained were city Comptroller Brad Lander, who previously faced arrest for linking arms with a detained individual. The coalition of officials, advocates, and faith leaders sought to inspect holding rooms in the 26 Federal Plaza building, advocating for compliance with a preliminary injunction that calls for the elimination of squalid conditions and overcrowding in the facility. Other prominent figures, including city Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, were also arrested while advocating for the rights of the detained. In total, over 75 individuals were detained during the demonstration, bringing attention to critical issues surrounding immigration and human rights.
