In brief

U.S. resettlement leaders express concern over President Trump's executive order halting refugee admissions, which they claim jeopardizes Afghan allies who aided American troops. The move, considered a betrayal of commitments, particularly affects those now at risk from Taliban reprisals.

In a critical response to President Trump’s latest executive order, experts warn that the recent suspension of refugee admissions could place thousands of Afghan allies in peril. This order, labelled “Realigning the United States Refugee Admissions Program,” sets to take effect next Monday and does not outline a timeline for when the suspension might be lifted. Advocacy groups, particularly AfghanEvac—a coalition of over 250 organizations—are voicing their alarm regarding the implications of this decision for those who supported U.S. military efforts in Afghanistan prior to the Taliban’s resurgence. Shawn VanDiver, president of AfghanEvac, described the order as a “broken promise” that threatens to abandon countless Afghan wartime allies, as many remain in hiding due to the Taliban's oppressive governance. Additionally, this suspension may hinder the ability of family members of active-duty U.S. service members to seek refuge, exacerbating feelings of betrayal.Historically, resettlement initiatives in the U.S. have been a source of national pride, embodying the country's commitment to human rights. However, amid diplomatic and domestic challenges, the Biden administration previously enacted Operation Allies Welcome to facilitate the entry of 76,000 Afghans evacuated as the U.S. withdrew in a chaotic retreat in 2021. As the situation in Afghanistan continues to evolve, experts emphasize the importance of re-evaluating policies to ensure the safety and support of those who risked their lives alongside American forces during two decades of conflict.
