A medical helicopter crashed on a highway in Sacramento, critically injuring three crew members who were aboard, including a paramedic who was pinned underneath. The incident drew attention from nearby motorists who came together to lift part of the aircraft to free her.
The helicopter, dispatched to transport a patient to a hospital, experienced an emergency shortly after 7 p.m., leading to its crash upside-down on the highway, creating a large debris field. Captain Justin Sylvia, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Fire Department, expressed astonishment that no vehicles were struck in the busy area, calling the lack of additional injuries 'mind-blowing.'
Authorities reported that onlookers noticed the helicopter descending rapidly, prompting traffic in the area to slow down, which may have aided in avoiding further casualties. Emergency responders successfully rescued the injured crew members, with all three taken to hospitals in critical condition.
“It took every ounce of all approximately 15 people to move that aircraft just enough to get her out,” Sylvia explained, highlighting the collaborative efforts of bystanders and emergency personnel. Thankfully, the helicopter did not catch fire during the crash.
The accident resulted in the closure of the eastbound lanes of Highway 50, forcing traffic detours while the investigation commenced. Images from the scene depicted a long line of stopped cars behind the wrecked helicopter, illustrating the chaos created by the incident.
The helicopter was operated by REACH Air Medical, who expressed their concern and sent out prayers for the crew as investigations into the crash details continue. Sacramento City Councilwoman Lisa Kaplan described the crash scene as sobering during her ride alongside law enforcement, reinforcing the unpredictable risks associated with medical air transport.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, with emergency services and the California Highway Patrol actively examining the circumstances surrounding this hazardous event.
