Georgetown University researcher Badar Khan Suri has been released from a Texas immigration detention center after a federal judge ruled that his detention violated his constitutional rights. Suri, an Indian national and postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown, was arrested on March 17 outside his Virginia home as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on activists supporting Palestinian rights.
U.S. authorities claimed Suri was spreading Hamas propaganda and maintained connections to terrorism, largely due to his marriage to Mapheze Saleh, a U.S. citizen with familial ties to Gaza. However, U.S. District Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles dismissed these assertions, emphasizing that the government failed to show evidence linking Suri to such activities. "There was no evidence submitted to this court regarding statements that he made," she stated, underscoring concerns over his right to free speech and due process.
Saleh expressed profound relief at the ruling, stating, "Hearing the judge's words brought tears to my eyes."
