Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has extended a unique invitation to former U.S. President Donald Trump, offering him a chance to live in his home for one week to witness firsthand the dire consequences of the war in Ukraine. Since the onset of Russia's invasion in 2022, Usyk has dedicated himself to advocating for peace and has called attention to the suffering being endured by the Ukrainian people.
The 36-year-old boxer stated in a recent interview with BBC Sport, "I advise American President Donald Trump to come to Ukraine and live in my house for one week," emphasizing the need for leaders to gain a true understanding of the realities faced by ordinary citizens living under threat. Usyk remarked, “Every night there are bombs and flights above my house. Bombs, rocket. Every night. It's enough."
Trump, who has claimed he could resolve the conflict quickly if re-elected, has been criticized for his remarks regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, suggesting that he plays a role in the war’s continuation. When asked if Trump might change his perspective after experiencing the war conditions in person, Usyk expressed uncertainty, noting, "Maybe he'll understand, maybe he won't." He poignantly highlighted, "Ukrainian people are dying. It's not just military guys, but children, women, grandmothers, grandfathers. For me it's hard. It's my country."
Since the outbreak of war coincided with his rematch against Anthony Joshua in 2022, Usyk has actively participated in peace advocacy alongside other prominent figures, including retired boxers Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko. The Ukrainian champion, who holds multiple titles including WBA (super), WBO, and WBC, is set to face British boxer Daniel Dubois on July 19 at Wembley Stadium, which could further solidify his position in the boxing world while amplifying his platform for calling attention to the conflict in Ukraine.
