In brief

Mohamed Sabry Soliman, an Egyptian national who entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2022, is now facing charges related to a violent attack on a peaceful protest in Boulder, Colorado. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed he remained in the country illegally after his visa expired. The attack left eight injured and is being investigated as terrorism.

The suspect implicated in a violent incident in Boulder, Colorado, has been identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian citizen. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) disclosed that he entered the United States in August 2022 on a tourist visa, which expired in February 2023. As a result, Soliman is now considered to have been in the country illegally. On a recent Sunday, Soliman allegedly unleashed a “makeshift flamethrower” against demonstrators advocating for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. The attack led to injuries sustained by eight individuals, two of whom were reported to be in serious condition. Law enforcement swiftly apprehended Soliman after eyewitness accounts confirmed his involvement in the assault, leading to multiple charges, including first-degree murder.DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin remarked on social media about Soliman’s illegal status, adding that he had sought asylum in September 2022, without providing further details about that claim. Authorities are treating the attack as an act of terrorism, while the National Counterterrorism Center had previously communicated that there was no immediate derogatory information regarding Soliman prior to the incident. As investigations continue, Boulder County Jail remains the site of his detention, pending legal proceedings.
