In brief

Federal immigration agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection arrived at Coast Guard Island amid public protests in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Coast Guard supports measures to combat illegal immigration and related threats. Despite this, President Trump announced plans to reduce federal presence after discussions with local officials.

Federal immigration agents were greeted by protests Thursday in the San Francisco Bay Area on their way to Coast Guard Island, a government-owned artificial island with a long history. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents began arriving at Coast Guard Island to assist in federal efforts aimed at tracking down immigrants in the country illegally.

The Coast Guard, a part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, stated that they are leveraging their “unique authorities and capabilities to detect, deter, and interdict illegal aliens, narco-terrorists, and individuals intent on terrorism or other hostile activity before they reach our border.”

In response, President Trump remarked on Thursday that he would back off a planned surge of federal agents into San Francisco following discussions with the local mayor, leaving some uncertainty over whether the planned deployment of National Guard and CBP agents would proceed.

Coast Guard Island spans 67 acres and was formed in 1913 in the Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda. This island is federally owned and access is restricted to authorized personnel, contributing to its military significance. Base Alameda has been operational there since 2012, providing varied support for Coast Guard activities along the West Coast.

Originally constructed to resolve sanitation issues in Alameda, the island has since served numerous purposes, including a base for the Coast Guard since 1926. Now home to four national security cutters, the base continues to play a vital role in U.S. coast and national security operations.
