In brief
Farmers face irreversible losses as extreme weather events challenge traditional practices and communities in southern Spain.
In a catastrophic weather event, southern Spain experienced one of its most extreme rainfalls on record, with a month's worth of rain descending in just a single day. The torrential storms began late Monday night, touching down heavily across agricultural hotspots like Andalusia and cities such as Valencia, Murcia, and Malaga. For many farmers, including Manuel Yerai from El Ejido, the destruction was immediate and severe. “We were preparing for the harvest,” he lamented, describing how hail the size of tennis balls devastated his greenhouses. “Now they look like they’ve been targeted in a war zone.” In addition to his damaged crops, he reported widespread destruction, with properties flooded and vehicles swept away. Amid the chaos, the local wildlife has also suffered, resulting in numerous dead sparrows found strewn across sidewalks.Meteorological records reveal that in certain areas, rainfall levels spiked as high as 200 liters per square meter over just a two-hour period. This surpasses typical monthly totals and has prompted Spain's meteorological agency to issue urgent warnings about the unprecedented rainfall. Experts indicate that the heavy downpours could persist through the weekend, amplifying the risks of further flooding and damage.“Such volumes of rain implicate extreme danger,” warned Rubén del Campo, a spokesman for the agency, urging locals to avoid unnecessary travel as conditions worsen. The extensive impact on agriculture and local livelihoods poses significant challenges for communities already grappling with the effects of climate change and other environmental stresses, further highlighting the need for sustainable adaptive practices. As this crisis unfolds, the resilience of local populations will be tested, reminding everyone of the deep connection between indigenous practices and the natural world that communities strive to preserve amidst growing threats.
