A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said.

Russia's Investigative Committee reported that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning after an explosive device planted under a car detonated.

Sarvarov, 56, was the head of the armed forces' operational training department, according to the committee.

One theory being explored is that the bomb was planted with the assistance of Ukrainian intelligence services. Ukraine has not yet commented on the incident.

Investigators have been dispatched to the crime scene, located in a car park near an apartment block in the southern part of Moscow.

Visuals from the scene depict a severely damaged white vehicle, with its doors blown off, surrounded by other cars in the lot.

Since the commencement of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there has been a notable increase in targeted attacks against military officials within the Russian capital.

In April, Gen Yaroslav Moskalik met a similar fate in a car bomb attack encountered in Moscow. Later, Gen Igor Kirillov was killed in December 2024 when a device concealed in a scooter detonated remotely.

A Ukrainian source subsequently informed the BBC that Kirillov was killed by Ukraine's security service; however, this claim was never confirmed officially, as Ukraine typically refrains from acknowledging responsibility for targeted actions.
