Four police officers in France are now ordered to face trial following their brutal assault of Michel Zecler, a well-known music producer in the rap industry. The incident, which occurred in November 2020 and was recorded on security cameras, has reignited critical discussions about police brutality across France.

Originally, the trial included charges of racial discrimination. However, investigative judges determined there wasn't adequate evidence to substantiate claims that the officers used a racial slur during the incident. Michel Zecler’s legal representative expressed discontent over this decision, emphasizing that accounts and evidence support their client's version of events.

According to the Paris prosecutor's office, three of the officers assaulted Zecler at his music studio, subsequently filing misleading reports stating that Zecler had resisted arrest during an ID check. The security footage stands in stark contrast to their claims, showing the violent encounter clearly.

While the absence of the racial motivation charge does not affect the maximum prison sentences the officers could face, it has raised concerns regarding the overall accountability of law enforcement in instances involving minority communities. The officers, identified only as Aurélien L., Philippe T., and Pierre P., could receive sentences of up to 15 years, along with financial penalties amounting to €225,000 (approximately $264,000) for forgery and aggravated assault charges.
