In brief

Russian authorities are conducting an investigation into the death of Roman V. Starovoyt, who was found dead from a gunshot wound in his car shortly after being relieved of his ministerial duties. The incident raises questions amid ongoing tensions from the Ukraine invasion.

Russia’s transport minister, Roman V. Starovoyt, was discovered dead in his car from a gunshot wound, according to Russian authorities. His body was found in Odintsovo, a suburb of Moscow, just hours after the Kremlin announced his dismissal from office. Initially, authorities are treating the death as a possible suicide. Starovoyt, aged 53, had been in charge of the Kursk region, bordering Ukraine, for six and a half years before stepping into his ministerial role in May 2024.His tenure as transport minister was marked by tumultuous events, including the unprecedented invasion of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region just three months after he took office. This event was seen as a significant embarrassment for President Vladimir V. Putin, who has faced increasing domestic backlash in the wake of the territorial losses. Following the invasion, several former officials from the Kursk region have been arrested due to allegations of embezzling funds designated for border fortifications during Starovoyt’s governorship. The spokeswoman for Russia's Investigative Committee, Svetlana Petrenko, noted that authorities are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding Starovoyt’s death. In a rapid sequence of events, President Putin issued a decree relieving Starovoyt of his duties shortly before his death was reported and introduced his successor, Andrei S. Nikitin. The Kremlin has yet to provide further commentary on the situation or the allegations surrounding Starovoyt’s term, leaving many questions unanswered as investigations unfold.
