In brief

Israel has intercepted a missile launched by Houthi militants from Yemen as tensions soar following recent threats against Houthi leadership. The ongoing missile attacks from the Houthis, occurring in solidarity with Palestinian allies, have prompted Israeli military responses deep into Yemen, although the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain.

Israel announced today that its defense forces successfully intercepted a ballistic missile fired by Houthi militants based in Yemen. The attack occurred shortly after Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant threatened decisive action against Houthi leadership, including calls to eliminate them. Sirens rang out in Tel Aviv and neighboring regions, awakening residents as the country's defense systems engaged the hostile missile, which was ultimately neutralized before it breached Israeli territory. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or damages. The Houthi movement, which receives support from Iran and governs a significant part of northern Yemen, has launched numerous attacks against Israel in recent months, principally fueled by solidarity with Palestinians. This uptick in aggression from the Houthis began following the onset of the Gaza conflict, instigated by Hamas's attacks on October 7, 2023. They have also targeted international maritime routes in the Red Sea, aiming to impose an embargo against Israel.Throughout December, Houthi forces have repeatedly escalated their campaigns against Israel, firing rockets and drones on at least eight occasions. A missile strike on Tel Aviv occurred on Saturday night, with the Israeli defense systems unable to intercept it entirely, resulting in minor damage. Moreover, a school in Ramat Gan was struck due to a partially intercepted missile. In response, the Israeli military has conducted airstrikes targeting strategic locations within Yemen, including power plants in the capital, Sana. However, the question remains as to how effectively Israel, alongside its allies, can dismantle the Houthi threat from the region, given their recent successes in targeting Israel.
