In brief

In aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, eastern Australia faces severe flooding threats, power outages affecting hundreds of thousands, and ongoing search operations for a missing driver. Emergency crews are navigating evacuation orders as heavy rainfall continues.

In a troubling turn of events, eastern Australia is grappling with the residual impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, sparking fears of significant flooding and leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity. The cyclone, having weakened but not dissipated, brought with it relentless rain and hazardous winds, prompting emergency alerts in areas already reeling from natural disasters. Brisbane, Australia’s third-largest city, appeared to have largely escaped the worst of the storm. However, regions to the south, particularly in New South Wales, experienced a dramatic weather shift causing widespread flooding. Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, reported ongoing rescue operations, as emergency crews searched for a man who had gone missing in Dorrigo. This small town received over 10 inches of rain in just a single night."This emergency is not over,” Minns warned, illustrating concern over rising river levels and sustained rainfall, alongside severe wind conditions expected to persist. The police report indicated that the missing individual had been in a vehicle swept away by floodwaters, managing temporary safety on a tree before being engulfed again before assistance could arrive. With over 300,000 customers without power following the storm, the local broadcasting network, ABC, confirmed that emergency responders had conducted around 30 flood rescues within the last 24 hours. Many of these rescues involved individuals attempting to navigate vehicles through flooded streets.Communities across the Northern Rivers region are under evacuation orders, particularly in Lismore, which had faced a catastrophic flooding event in 2022, leading to significant loss of life—a somber reminder of the potential dangers posed by natural disasters. In light of the ongoing crises, Minns assured that coordination and swift action for recovery efforts are underway, referencing past criticisms regarding the sluggish response during the 2022 floods. The situation remains dire as forecasters warn of additional heavy rainfall and the risk of levee breaches in vulnerable urban areas.
