A woman from Saldanha Bay, South Africa, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after the harrowing conviction of selling her 6-year-old daughter, Joshlin Smith. Racquel Smith, 35, was found guilty alongside two accomplices of kidnapping and exploitation, as Joshlin remains missing post-disappearance in February 2024.
During the trial, Racquel displayed no remorse, lying consistently and failing to cooperate with authorities, as her family mourns the loss of her daughter. The mother reportedly sold her child for 20,000 rand (about $1,100) to fund her drug addiction, prompting outrage and extensive media coverage, including televised court proceedings. With unanswered questions looming, the girl's paternal grandmother expressed heartbreak over the continuing mystery of her granddaughter's whereabouts. Public interest in the case serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing battle against child trafficking and exploitation.
