In brief

The leader of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Ataullah, has been taken into custody in Bangladesh along with nine of his associates, revealing the continued turmoil facing the Rohingya population.

The Bangladeshi police confirmed the arrest on Monday in Narayanganj District, where Ataullah and nine other suspected ARSA militants were charged under an antiterrorism law. These individuals are now being held in police custody, as reported by local authorities. The ARSA, which claims to represent the Rohingya Muslim minority, has faced significant backlash since its coordinated attacks on Myanmar security forces in 2016 and 2017. Such actions were subsequently exploited by Myanmar’s military as a justification for widespread violent measures against the Rohingya, leading to a humanitarian crisis, with the U.S. government labeling the expulsions a genocide. The 2017 exodus saw over one million Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh, where they presently reside in precarious tent settlements, including the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar. Their situation is exacerbated by internal conflicts, including armed skirmishes between different militant factions, which further complicate their attempts to find stability. This atmosphere of violence and instability has affected the younger generation, contributing to growing radicalization among the youth and a continuing cycle of trauma within the community.
