The newly discovered fish, Branchiostegus sanae, has been aptly named after San, the warrior princess from the renowned animated film by Hayao Miyazaki, due to its striking facial markings that resemble her war paint. This new species was identified by a team of Chinese researchers who noted the unique cheek stripes on the fish. The character of San, raised by wolves and symbolizing a fierce protector of nature, resonates deeply with the film's themes of environmental preservation.
The fish belongs to the deepwater tilefish family, specifically known as Branchiostegidae, found at remarkable depths reaching up to 600 meters beneath the ocean surface. The research conducted by scientists from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Zhejiang University, and Ocean University of China included genetic analyses confirming the novelty of this species. Lead researcher Haochen Huang emphasized that through naming this fish after San, the team wishes to promote a narrative of harmony between humanity and nature, akin to the messages portrayed in Princess Mononoke.
The presence of deepwater tilefish is common in seafood markets across East and Southeast Asia; however, the diversity within the Branchiostegidae family is limited, with only 31 recognized species. The identification of this unique fish, referred to as Branchiostegus sanae, marks a significant occurrence in the field of marine biology, as only three new species from the Branchiostegus genus have been found in the last 34 years. Preserved specimens of the newly discovered species will contribute to further scientific research and understanding of these deep-sea ecosystems.
