In brief
The FBI apprehended Singh, who is charged with significant terrorism-related activities in India and has been living undercover in the U.S.
In a significant move, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the arrest of Harpreet Singh in Sacramento, California, on Thursday. Singh, wanted in India for alleged terrorist activities, had reportedly evaded capture by using disposable phones and encrypted communication applications.Indian authorities claim that Singh is associated with the Sikh separatist movement and is linked to a grenade attack on a retired police officer in Chandigarh, India, last September. Back in January, India’s National Investigation Agency had put out a cash reward for information leading to his capture. The FBI’s investigation suggests that Singh collaborated with the intelligence agency of Pakistan, and assisted operatives in India by providing funds, ammunition, and logistical support for the Babbar Khalsa International, a designated terrorist group. This incident forms part of a larger trend where the Indian government has issued warrants against multiple individuals residing in the U.S., amidst escalating concerns over terrorism and national security. As global efforts to counteract terrorism intensify, the tensions surrounding Sikh separatist movements are increasingly attracting attention, especially from Indian authorities. The arrest of Singh underscores the complex dynamics of international law enforcement and the challenges of managing cross-border terrorism threats.
