In brief

The incident highlights ongoing concerns over safety regulations as investigations commence into the fatal crash.

In a tragic accident on Thursday afternoon, a cable car carrying tourists on Monte Faito, south of Naples, plunged to the ground and rolled down the mountainside, resulting in the death of at least four individuals. The incident left a fifth person in critical condition, with significant rescue efforts launched in the wake of the disaster. Luca Cari, spokesperson for Italy’s firefighters, expressed the severity of the situation, stating, “These are very ugly situations.”The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed, although officials reported that one of the deceased was an employee of EAV, the public transportation entity operating the cable car. Alongside the fatalities, nine passengers became stranded on a different cable car that stalled due to the crash; they had to be hoisted to safety by firefighters, who equipped them with harnesses. An investigation has begun in Torre Annunziata, the region's judicial authority overseeing Castellammare di Stabia, to determine the cause of the crash. A team of over 50 firefighters was dispatched for rescue operations amid challenging conditions, including high winds and fog, which complicated the situation, as stated by Vincenzo De Luca, the governor of Campania. The cable car, linking Castellammare di Stabia, home to 66,000 residents, to a height exceeding 3,600 feet, is a vital component of local tourism, offering spectacular views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Tragically, this incident echoes a prior major cable car disaster in 2021 that resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals due to equipment failure. Umberto De Gregorio, chairman of EAV, denounced the incident as an “unimaginable and unpredictable tragedy,” noting that the cable car had only resumed operations for the tourist season 10 days before the accident. The railway, crucial for tourism and local transport, now faces scrutiny over safety mechanisms as the investigation continues.
