In brief
The NAACP has initiated a lawsuit against Elon Musk’s xAI, alleging that its gas-burning turbines are causing environmental harm to underprivileged communities in Memphis, emphasizing the need for accountability among major companies.
A recent legal challenge led by the NAACP against Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm, xAI, has drawn attention to environmental issues in Memphis. The lawsuit claims that the company has been operating natural-gas-burning turbines without the necessary permits, contributing to air pollution in predominantly Black neighborhoods.Located in South Memphis, xAI’s data center includes a supercomputer facility that began operations last year. The NAACP, represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center, filed a notice of intention to sue, alleging that the turbines have been emitting harmful pollutants into nearby residential areas. NAACP President Derrick Johnson emphasized the importance of addressing environmental injustices and criticized the company's practices. In response to the allegations, xAI stated that it is committed to its environmental responsibilities and ensures that its operations comply with relevant laws. The data center, housed in a repurposed manufacturing site, relies on multiple gas-powered turbines to meet its substantial energy needs, which are claimed to be comparable to those of approximately 100,000 homes.Aerial footage taken earlier in the year indicated the presence of at least 35 gas turbines at the facility, raising concerns about the amount of heat and emissions produced by the operations. Activists and local residents are calling for increased oversight and accountability from corporations that impact their communities without proper regulations.
