In an exhilarating turn of events, the Dakar Biennale has become a lively gathering for the youth of Senegal, characterized by their enthusiasm and social media savvy. Traditionally dominated by affluent collectors and art elites, this biennale, taking place in the capital city of Dakar, now welcomes a surge of teenagers and young adults who are eager to explore the vibrant world of contemporary art.
This year's edition is particularly marked by the presence of young visitors at the Old Courthouse, the biennale's primary venue. Clad in diverse styles—from casual flip-flops paired with stylish clothing to eye-catching accessories—these young individuals are redefining the art scene. For many, this exhibition represents a new adventure in discovering contemporary art tailored for an international audience.
“I think it's amazing, so colorful and engaging,” remarked 17-year-old Sokna Mbene Thiam, who attended the biennale with a group of friends. “Plus, it gives us the chance to take great photos for Instagram, and best of all, it’s free!”
Their fresh and vibrant energy is reshaping perceptions of art, making it more accessible and enjoyable beyond the confines of wealth and elite status. The biennale not only celebrates artistic expression but also emboldens the voices of Senegal's youth, paving the way for a more inclusive dialogue on culture and creativity in the region.
