In brief
After nearly a week of frantic rescue operations, Lithuania's Defense Ministry announced the recovery of a submerged U.S. military vehicle. The soldiers aboard went missing during a training mission in a muddy area, with ongoing concerns regarding their well-being.
Lithuania’s Defense Ministry confirmed on Monday the successful extraction of a U.S. Army vehicle from a bog, nearly a week after the soldiers aboard were reported missing. The vehicle, an M88 Hercules, was discovered engulfed in a muddy swamp, prompting an extensive recovery operation. The soldiers were last seen during a routine training mission near the Belarus border, raising alarms when they did not return on the designated timeline. According to the U.S. military, the unit was tasked with retrieving another Army vehicle when they may have veered off the roadway and subsequently submerged in the bog.Divers from the U.S. Navy faced severe conditions while working to attach cables to the sunken vehicle, compounded by the thick mud that made access difficult. As part of the recovery, excavators were deployed to drain water from the bog and extract the M88 Hercules, as officials noted that they were engaged in a “struggle against the formidable swamp.”The Lithuanian defense minister remarked on social media about the challenges of recovery efforts, which were subjected to further delays due to a landslide on Sunday. The search initially encompassed forested areas along with swampy terrains and involved military helicopters and diving teams. Hundreds of soldiers and law enforcement officers from both Lithuania and the United States participated in the rescue mission.Tensions in the region are heightened, as Belarus, an ally of Russia, often criticizes Lithuania for its cooperation with NATO forces. The search for the missing soldiers underscored the importance of unity among allies, as articulated by President Gitanas Nauseda of Lithuania, with support also coming from Polish military engineers in collaborative recovery efforts.
