Former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy has been shot dead in Lviv, Ukrainian authorities have confirmed.
Reports indicate the shooting occurred in the Frankivsk district of Lviv around midday local time on Saturday. As of now, it is unclear whether the shooter has been apprehended.
Parubiy, aged 54, was notable for his role in the Maidan movement, advocating for greater European Union ties and contributing to the fall of pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his condolences, describing the act as a terrible murder.\
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still murky, with unconfirmed reports suggesting that the assailant, dressed as a courier and riding an e-bike, shot Parubiy multiple times.
The national police, along with Lviv regional police and security service, are actively investigating the incident. In a statement released on Telegram, Zelensky noted, All necessary forces and means are being deployed to investigate and find the killer.
