A tragic incident unfolded in the Hollow Water First Nation of Manitoba, where an 18-year-old woman was fatally stabbed and seven others sustained injuries during a mass stabbing event. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that the attacker, identified as the victim's brother, died in a car crash while attempting to flee the scene.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, about 200 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg. According to police reports, the victims were known to each other within this small Anishinaabe community, which has a population of just a few hundred.
The incident began shortly after 3:45 AM local time when a tribal security officer alerted authorities about an assault that had occurred. Upon arrival, police discovered multiple victims and ultimately found evidence of a second crime scene.
Among those injured was Michael Raven, who was reportedly stabbed in the lung while asleep at his home. Raven's family described the community's deep shock and expressed their concern over the violent nature of the attack, which is unprecedented for Hollow Water.
RCMP Superintendent Rob Lasson indicated that the investigation is ongoing, but they have not yet determined a motive for the attack. The federal police issued a statement expressing their condolences to the Hollow Water community and underscoring the importance of support within the community in the wake of such violence.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew commended the police officer involved in apprehending the suspect, highlighting her courage in stopping a potential further rampage. Chief of Hollow Water First Nation, Larry Barker, emphasized the deep connections between families in the community as he addressed residents, urging them to support one another during this difficult time.
This attack coincides with the anniversary of a previous mass stabbing in James Smith Cree Nation, raising further awareness about violence within Indigenous communities. As Hollow Water begins to heal from this tragedy, leaders stress the need for solidarity and assistance in rebuilding hope and safety.
