A man who took the life of a 14-year-old boy during a chaotic 20-minute rampage in northeast London has been sentenced to life in prison. Marcos Arduini Monzo, 37, was deemed responsible for the brutal murder of Daniel Anjorin, who was tragically killed just steps from his family home while on his way to school.During the sentencing, Judge Joel Bennathan described the scene as one transformed from tranquility to chaos as Monzo, in a drug-induced psychosis, brandished a samurai sword and attacked multiple people. Evidence presented included footage of Monzo shouting aggressive statements as he engaged with police officers following the attack on Anjorin. On April 30, 2024, Monzo commenced his violent outburst around 7 a.m. by striking a man with his van before exiting the vehicle to assault him with his weapon. The injuries inflicted ended in the tragic death of young Daniel Anjorin, who was discovered still clutching his school backpack by his grieving father.Following the assault on Anjorin, Monzo's violent spree continued as he confronted police officers and attacked two more individuals, including a couple within their home. Despite the officers being unarmed, they courageously pursued Monzo, who inflicted a skull fracture on a female officer during his attempt to evade capture.Monzo's deadly episode ended with a chase that culminated in his eventual capture through the use of Tasers. The court learned that prior to these events, Monzo had harmed his pet cat in a disturbing display of violence, indicating the severe nature of his psychosis. While prosecutors noted Monzo's expressed admiration for extremist figures, they emphasized that there was no political motive behind his rampage. The court sentenced him to a life term, specifying a minimum of 40 years before he would be eligible for parole, leaving the community to reconcile the profound loss and assess the implications of mental health in public safety.
