In brief
Recent airstrikes conducted by Israel in Syria were a response to mounting sectarian violence, particularly affecting the Druse community, resulting in numerous fatalities. The Israeli military's actions mark a deepening involvement in the ongoing unrest throughout the region.
Israel conducted airstrikes in Syria on Wednesday, joining the fray as sectarian violence escalated around areas populated by the Druse minority. Over two days of conflict, the Israeli military targeted individuals allegedly responsible for attacks on Druse civilians in the vicinity of Damascus. The Syrian governor of the region reported casualties, including a member from the Syrian government's security forces and a civilian, indicating the severe consequences of the conflict. The identity of the targeted “operatives” remains undisclosed, but the area has seen intense confrontations between pro-government forces and Druse militias in recent days. With a significant Druse population residing in Israel, whose members often serve in the military, the Israeli government expressed concern over the unfolding violence. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 39 individuals have lost their lives in these clashes, with 22 fatalities recorded on Wednesday alone. The airstrikes were initiated following outbreaks of violence in the town of Ashrafieh Sahnaya, predominantly inhabited by the Druse people. This military intervention reflects Israel's broader strategic interests in maintaining the security of its borders and protecting minority communities within conflict-affected regions in Syria.
