In brief

Isaac Steidl, the founder of the controversial website coco.fr, has been indicted in France on multiple charges related to his platform's alleged role in facilitating sexual abuse and drug trafficking, with over 23,000 implications tied to a high-profile rape trial.

The founder of the notorious website coco.fr, which gained infamy during the case involving Dominique Pelicot, has been indicted in France on a slew of serious charges. Isaac Steidl, aged 44, faces potential sentences of up to 10 years in prison and fines reaching 7.5 million euros (about $7.7 million) if convicted. Following his indictment, he was released from custody but remains under judicial supervision, having posted a bail of 100,000 euros and is prohibited from leaving France.Founded in 2003, coco.fr became a focal point during the trial against Pelicot and 50 other men, all of whom were found guilty of raping Pelicot’s ex-wife, Gisèle, while she was heavily sedated. Among the charges levied against Steidl is the establishment of an online platform that allegedly facilitated organized criminal activities, alongside other severe accusations like complicity in drug trafficking and aggravated pimping.Steidl firmly denies the allegations and has stated his intention to cooperate fully with authorities to clear his name. The trial revealed that the website became a gathering place for predators, where users could access private chat rooms designed for illicit discussions, free from moderation or record-keeping.Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau highlighted that the website has been implicated in over 23,000 cases across France from 2021 to 2024, affecting around 480 alleged victims, with reports of sexual abuse, pimping, and homicide being among the grave accusations. The site was dismantled following an extensive 18-month investigation that encompassed law enforcement agencies across Europe, resulting in the freezing of accounts and the seizure of significant assets. In addition, authorities conducted searches of Steidl’s properties, further connecting him to the widespread criminal activities associated with coco.fr.The broader implications of this indictment raise urgent questions about the effectiveness of legal regulations governing online platforms and their vulnerability to exploitation for criminal activities.
