In brief
The recruitment process in Ukraine has grown increasingly urgent, leading to tearful scenes at military gathering points as families cope with the sudden drafting of men into the ongoing conflict.
Outside a military recruitment center on the outskirts of Kyiv, families are gathering, overshadowed by the anxiety of impending separations. With Ukraine facing severe troop shortages and heavy losses, the urgency to fill ranks has prompted a nationwide push to round up potential recruits. On a recent morning, the atmosphere was heavy with tension as men awaited their fate behind the imposing metal gates. A worried boy, wearing a camouflage coat, cried out for his father while his mother attempted to calm him. In the background, Svitlana Vakar anxiously held her young grandson, Maksym, whose father had just been taken by military officers. The moment was bittersweet, as mothers and children showed affection, including a tender kiss from Svitlana on Maksym’s head, all while grappling with the harsh reality of impending absences. “Why take him like a dog? Not allowing him to say goodbye to family, to kids,” she lamented, tears streaming down her face. Initially, at the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, recruitment centers experienced a surge of volunteers. However, after three exhausting years of war, the once vibrant atmosphere has given way to a somber gathering where men now wait anxiously for their draft notices, either preparing to comply or trying to evade capture. In this climate of distress, the poignant struggles of families are a stark reminder of the human toll the conflict takes, as they confront the resurfacing fears of loss and separation in this dire chapter of their lives.
