In brief
Rescue teams race against time to locate workers trapped beneath the debris of a collapsed office tower after a devastating earthquake left numerous individuals unaccounted for in Thailand.
In the wake of a daunting earthquake that struck both Thailand and Myanmar, search and rescue operations have escalated dramatically in Bangkok, particularly at the site of a collapsed office tower. Amid the chaos, friends and families cling to hope as teams—comprising local and international rescuers from Thailand, China, the US, and Israel—strive to uncover signs of life. The situation remains grim following a moment of potential relief on Sunday night when rescue teams discovered what appeared to be a large, open space in the rubble, raising hopes of finding survivors. "We thought for sure we’d find someone," recounted Piyalux Thinkaew, chief of operations for the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. However, as efforts progressed, crews venturing into the space found it without any survivors.Monday brought additional signs from infrared sensors indicating possible life beneath the chaos, but as time passed, the hopes of families and rescuers began to dwindle. By dusk, the fateful "golden window"—the first 72 hours of a rescue operation when survival chances are highest—was nearing its end, with no additional survivors being found.“We’re very disappointed,” admitted Piyalux, revealing the somber reality the rescuers now must face—to possibly transition from a search for survivors into a recovery operation.Despite the hearts of countless loved ones hanging in uncertainty, search endeavors are determined to continue. Approximately 80 workers are still presumed trapped under the significant weight of debris, an overwhelming reminder of the natural disaster’s force that shocked the community. The sentiments of hope, anxiety, and heartbreak are shared across the region, with family members anxiously awaiting updates from the site, holding onto the memories and love they once shared with those missing. As this tragedy unfolds, the international community watches closely, standing in solidarity with those impacted by nature's devastating blow.
