During the early hours of Tuesday morning, Carwin Javie Molleja was enjoying a night out at Jet Set nightclub with his mother, Carmin, and friends. They were there to see a concert by merengue star Rubby Pérez. What was supposed to be a joyful evening turned into a nightmare when he heard a noise and moments later the ceiling caved in, causing devastation as panic ensued.

“I don’t think anyone expected that a small stone falling could lead to the entire roof collapsing,” Carwin recalled. Both he and his mother were struck by falling debris but managed to escape the immediate danger. In a moment of instinct, Carwin hugged his mother tightly as screams filled the air and chaos unfolded around them.

Despite their narrow escape, Carwin could not ignore the heartbreaking reality inside the nightclub. He made frantic efforts to locate his friends, calling out for Jessica and her sister amidst the chaos but heard no response. Despite the overwhelming sense of helplessness as he witnessed others trapped under the wreckage, he bravely continued to try reaching them, running out to make calls to paramedics before going back in.

Witnessing the horror unfold, Carwin remarked on the pandemonium surrounding him. “People were going crazy,” he said, as injured club-goers were pulled out and emergency services began to arrive with ambulances. However, he noted a lack of heavy equipment to move debris initially, which impeded rescue efforts.

As he spent approximately an hour and a half at the scene, the devastating reality struck when Lakewood and his mother had to leave, needing to ensure her safety despite his desire to continue searching for Jessica. Later that day, he confirmed the heartbreaking news that both of his friends had been found deceased.

Reflecting on his experience, Carwin expressed deep sorrow for not being able to save his friend, stating, “It feels awful not being able to do anything.” This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unexpected turns it can take, leaving a community in mourning.
