In brief

After vanishing from her pen on Kangaroo Island in late 2023, the dachshund Valerie has been spotted alive, despite the challenges of capturing her. Rescue efforts are ongoing with the community's support as new sightings provide hope for her recovery.

A courageous miniature dachshund named Valerie has evaded capture on Kangaroo Island, Australia, for over a year after escaping her owners in November 2023. Accompanied by her pink collar, Valerie's survival has been confirmed through numerous sightings, spurring a dedicated effort for her rescue.Valerie's adventure began when her owners, Josh Fishlock and Georgia Gardner, were vacationing on Kangaroo Island and she slipped away into the wild. Despite intensive searches lasting five days with help from locals, the couple eventually returned home to New South Wales, disheartened by their failure to find their pet.Recently, hopes declined when Kangala Wildlife Rescue announced that onlookers spotted Valerie approximately ten miles from her last known location in Stokes Bay. "Based on firsthand accounts and video evidence, we now know that Valerie is alive," the organization shared on social media.Efforts to recapture the spirited pup have presented obstacles, as she tends to flee at the sight of humans or vehicles. Rescuers have implemented various strategies, including surveillance and trapping methods, attempting to coax Valerie back home. “This is a tiny dog in a huge area, and we will need help from the public to report any sightings and a lot of luck,” the rescue team stated.Amid the uncertainty, members of the Kangala team, including a man named Jared, shared optimistic updates through video communications. “We have seen her. We’ve managed to narrow down the search area to one specific point,” he revealed. The steady influx of sightings has encouraged Valerie’s owners, with Fishlock expressing his surprise that she has thrived without their care for so long.Gardner reflected on Valerie's unexpected resilience, stating, “To think that she even went one night outside in the rain, oh my gosh. To think that she’s gone a year and a half is incredible.” While dachshunds are not built for endurance, their spirited and brave nature has enabled Valerie to navigate the challenges of island life.Kangala Wildlife Rescue remains hopeful of a happy outcome, affirming their commitment to reuniting Valerie with her loving owners.
