In brief

Two Chinese astronauts, Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong, recently completed the longest recorded spacewalk in history, marking a significant achievement for China's space program.

In a noteworthy milestone for space exploration, Chinese astronauts Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong have completed a nine-hour spacewalk, officially recognized by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA). This remarkable feat eclipses the previous record set by American astronauts, who spent eight hours and 56 minutes outside their spacecraft in 2001. The astronauts, part of the Shenzhou-19 mission, ventured outside the Tiangong Space Station to conduct vital work on equipment designed to shield the station from space debris and inspect other systems. During this mission, which began in late October, the crew is expected to remain in orbit for six months, conducting various experiments and additional spacewalks. An exhilarating experience for the astronauts, one of them, Mr. Song, expressed feelings of both awe and responsibility associated with mankind's journey into space after completing the mission. “While admiring the wondrous views in space, we also had a deep feeling of the weight and greatness of the manned space endeavor,” he stated. The history of spacewalks dates back to 1965 when a Soviet astronaut spent just 16 minutes outside his spacecraft. The first Chinese spacewalk occurred in 2008, lasting only 19 minutes. China's ambition now extends beyond their space station, aiming to eventually send astronauts to the moon in the coming years. In addition to human crew members, the Tiangong Space Station also hosts scientific experiments, including studies on fruit flies to understand the impacts of microgravity and reduced magnetism on biological behavior and growth. While the CMSA has not yet officially designated the recent spacewalk as a world record, it is a significant milestone that showcases China's growing capabilities and ambitions in space exploration.© 2023 deeproots.news
