In brief

A Kyiv-based acting class culminated in a performance that uplifted teenagers facing the harsh realities of life in Ukraine. The initiative, led by Olesia Korzhenevska, provided a space for young people to express themselves and find hope through the art of theatre.

In the heart of Kyiv, a ray of hope emerged this summer through an innovative acting course tailored for teenagers grappling with the challenges of life in Ukraine amid ongoing war and the COVID-19 pandemic. Led by instructor Olesia Korzhenevska, the program sought to help adolescents rediscover joy, creativity, and connection, culminating in a performance of an original play titled “It’s okay!” that resonated with the theme of resilience. The pandemic and the six-year conflict with Russia had rendered many of these young individuals isolated, anxious, and uncertain about their future. Ms. Korzhenevska's call for students to join her course received an unexpected response when a mother reached out regarding her son, Sasha Suchyk. He had previously left the same program and struggled with severe mental health issues, spending most of the past year in a hospital due to clinical depression triggered by the relentless climate of fear.Despite Sasha's turbulent past, his participation in the acting class turned out to be transformative. Surrounded by peers who fostered a sense of belonging, he found a glimmer of hope. The course became a sanctuary where the teens could process their experiences and express their emotions freely without the heavy weight of conflict overshadowing their ambitions and dreams.Throughout the summer, the group rehearsal sessions bridged connections between students, encouraging them to share their stories. The culmination of their hard work was a performance that wasn’t just a showcase of their acting talents, but also a clearing of the emotional fog that enveloped them. The play embodied their realities but also served as a vehicle for hope, proving that creativity can thrive even in the direst circumstances. This youth theatre initiative illustrated the profound need for platforms that allow young people to express themselves and regain agency over their narratives. As Sasha and his classmates took to the stage, they showed that through art and community, hope could blossom amid adversity, inspiring others in Ukraine to envision a brighter future.
