In brief
In a rare display of public frustration, Kim Jong-un has vowed to address the failures associated with the recent launch of a new destroyer in North Korea, a setback seen as detrimental to the nation's military reputation.
North Korea's attempts to advance its military capabilities hit a stumbling block with the failed launch of a new 5,000-ton destroyer in Chongjin. This incident, which occurred during the ship's launch on Wednesday, has resulted in significant embarrassment for its leader, Kim Jong-un. Observers noted that the boat lost its balance mid-launch, with its stern sliding down the slipway while the bow remained stuck on the ramp, ultimately causing severe damage to the hull. The North’s state media described the incident as a "serious accident," but did not disclose any casualties or provide photographic evidence. In contrast, South Korean military officials reported that they had been monitoring the launch and confirmed the ship was left lying on its side in the water post-failure.Kim Jong-un, who has consistently highlighted military enhancements, including a focus on expanding his naval fleet, reacted strongly to the event. He branded it a "criminal act" resulting from negligence and what he termed “unscientific empiricism.” In his judgment, such lapses in military protocol are intolerable and could not be allowed to tarnish the nation's image.Determined to mitigate this setback, Kim has vowed to hold accountable those responsible for what he deemed lapses that “lowered the dignity and self-respect” of North Korea. He indicated that this matter would be addressed in an upcoming meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party. The North Korean leader has ordered for the damage to be repaired before the next party assembly in June, asserting that it is crucial for the nation’s political prestige.
