In brief
As extreme weather from Storm Bora continues to impact Greece, two tragic fatalities have been reported, accompanied by severe damages and evacuations in various regions.
Amid torrential rains and strong winds, the nation finds itself grappling with the aftermath of Storm Bora. The mayor of Rhodes has called for a state of emergency on the island, which has faced up to 30cm of rainfall since the storm struck on Saturday. Tragedy struck in Lemnos, where two men lost their lives; one man, aged 70, died while trying to secure his home, and another, a 57-year-old farmer, drowned after being swept away by floodwaters while attempting to rescue his vehicle. Local authorities have advised residents to evacuate due to fears of dam overflow, and many villagers from Kontias have been urged to leave their homes. The rural road networks connecting villages have been destroyed, leaving many trapped as roads became submerged. The regional governor, Giorgos Hatzimarkos, described the situation on Rhodes as "dramatic," with numerous roads impassable and bridges collapsing in some areas. In Thessaloniki, winds gusting over 80 km/h caused significant power outages and disruptions, affecting transportation and leading to maritime incidents. Emergency services continue to emphasize safety, urging citizens to limit movements while cleanup efforts are initiated alongside emergency declarations. With forecasters warning that Storm Bora's impact will persist, the regions of northern Aegean, central Macedonia, and Thessaloniki remain on high alert as they brace for continued adverse conditions.
