In brief
Tropical Storm Trami, following a catastrophic impact in the Philippines that left at least 80 dead, has now made landfall in Vietnam, raising concerns of flooding and landslides as it continues its path of destruction through the region.
In a tragic series of events, Tropical Storm Trami hit Vietnam's coast on Sunday near the city of Danang, just days after it caused significant devastation in the Philippines, claiming at least 80 lives. The storm, with maximum wind speeds recorded at 55 miles per hour, previously left behind a trail of destruction across the Philippine provinces, resulting in injuries for 66 individuals and leaving 34 more unaccounted for.As Trami advanced westward across the South China Sea to Vietnam, meteorological authorities warned of severe weather conditions, including coastal flooding and landslides, especially in areas forecasted to receive up to 16 inches of rain through Monday night. Preemptive measures led to the suspension of flights at four airports, including the busy Danang International Airport, all of which resumed operations soon after the storm made landfall. The aftermath of Trami in the Philippines has been severe, with over half a million evacuees displaced, nearly 28,000 residences damaged, and electrical systems disrupted in more than 150 municipalities. The emergency response faced obstacles as floodwaters hindered access to some of the most affected areas.Meanwhile, another storm, Kong-rey, has emerged near the Philippines, tracking similarly toward Luzon, the country’s most densely populated island, and is expected to move toward Japan's Ryukyu Islands shortly after. This latest storm follows last month’s Typhoon Yagi, which also left a significant death toll and considerable damage across the region. As affected populations continue to grapple with the fallout from these storms, relief efforts face critical challenges in reaching those in need amidst the continuing adverse weather conditions impacting the area.
